House Speaker Paul Ryan has told confidantes that he will not be running for re-election in the fall. Ryan will remain on the job until the end of his term, the reports said. Ryan has served in the House of Representatives since 1999, and though sources say it's likely he would receive a re-election bid, he would have a more hard opponent to face in Democrat Randy Bryce. Ryan's office later confirmed the news, saying Ryan would serve out the remainder of his term before retiring in January. Ryan said in a January interview with CBS News that re-election was a decision he and his wife were planning to make together in late spring, and in March he denied a rumor that he wouldn't seek re-election.

Brendan Buck, counselor to the speaker, says the "the speaker is proud of all that has been accomplished".

Operation Guardian is underway with 225 Guardsmen deployed to the border
Tom Keegan said last week that any request will be "promptly reviewed to determine how best we can assist our federal partners". Trump authorized the National Guard with governors' approval to enhance us border patrol security on Wednesday.

Ryan is expected to address his decision in a GOP conference meeting Wednesday.

The party has seen a large number of retirements, and Ryan's exit is certain to sap morale as Republicans seek to contain a surge in enthusiasm from Democrats, whose fortunes have been buoyed by the unpopularity of President Donald Trump.
