The legal threat comes after results were delayed over disputes related to the vote-counting process.

Outgoing President Ernest Bai Koroma has served two terms and was barred by the constitution from running again.

The President in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina in Abuja, Thursday, urged all stakeholders in Sierra Leone to work together for the peace, security and development of the country especially as the elections had been concluded and in view of the trend of recently held peaceful elections in West Africa. For years, Sierra Leone was rated one of Africa's most dynamic economies but it has slowed sharply since 2014, weighed down by the Ebola outbreak and a global commodity price decline. Mr. Bio was made deputy head of state then. This was Bio's second bid for the presidency.

In the March 7 general election, neither candidate had reached the 55 percent threshold constitutionally required to win.

In his first public speech after the coup, Bio justified his actions as a means to return Sierra Leone to a democratically elected civilian government and end the Sierra Leone civil war. His wife Fatima is a practicing Muslim, and an ethnic Mandingo from Koidu, Kono District in eastern Sierra Leone.
