Timothy Cunningham's remains were found Tuesday evening by fishermen along the Chattahoochee River in a rural area that had been previously searched and is not easily accessible by foot, authorities said at a press conference.

An employee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who was reported missing more than seven weeks ago was found drowned in a river not far from his house, with no sign of foul play, authorities said Thursday.

Preliminary findings show the CDC worker who went missing almost two months ago may have drowned, the Fulton County medical examiner said Thursday.

An Atlanta Police Department spokesman said Thursday that a body was recovered from the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta this week and that authorities have positively identified the deceased person as Timothy Cunningham. Michael O'Connor of the Atlanta Police told reporters. Doctors who've examined his body say there's no evidence of trauma or foul play, and they believe the cause of death is drowning. He said fire-rescue officials were unable to access the bank to retrieve the body, forcing them to go upstream and carefully move Cunningham's body further downstream. They said the state of the body found in the river was consistent with it being there since mid-February.

Although Massachusetts as a whole has not seen an overall increase in the number of new HIV diagnoses, the number of new diagnoses attributed to people who inject drugs has increased in recent years, most notably in the cities of Lawrence and Lowell. Atlanta police responded by doubling down on their version of events, citing the CDC as the source of the information.

"In fact, he received an early promotion/exceptional proficiency promotion to Commander effective July 1, 2017, in recognition of his exemplary performance in the U.S. Public Health Service", a March 12 statement from the agency said, in part. Police previously called his disappearance unusual but said there had been no indications of attack on Cunningham.

On the morning he went missing, his supervisor at the CDC talked to him about why he had been passed over for a promotion, police said.

He left work soon after, saying he was not feeling well.
