Wylie is the Canadian whistleblower who helped to reveal how his former employer, Cambridge Analytica, used data generated by a third-party app on Facebook to generate profiles of 50m people, in an act that may have tipped the U.S. presidential election and the Brexit referendum in 2016. He said that Cambridge Analytica was also used in countries that are struggling democracies, which he called "an example of what modern-day colonialism looks like".

Cambridge Analytica's parent firm is Strategic Communications Laboratories (SCL).

The earliest work referred to was during the 2003 Rajasthan elections, when it carried out two pieces of work focused on a "major State" party's "organisational strength" and also the voting population, including their attitudes and behaviour.

Wylie tweeted that he had been getting a lot of requests from Indian journalists to disclose SCL's past projects in India.

Last week, a spokesperson for the State Department, confirmed that SCL had a contract worth $500,000 with the State Department's Global Engagement Center (GEC), whose duties have included waging a social media war against the Islamic State (IS) group.

Wylie said that it was possible for Cambridge Analytica to create a psychological profile of a person more prone to a certain idea or conspiracy theories, and then target them with advertising.
