  • Attorney General's Office will not charge officers in death of Alton Sterling

The officers and Sterling struggled, during which Salamoni shot Sterling after yelling that Sterling had a gun.

Landry said his office reviewed all of the evidence compiled by the Justice Department, including opinions issued by independent experts, and also conducted its own interviews of eyewitnesses to the shooting. The officers told Sterling to put his hands on the hood of a auto and struggled with him when he didn't comply, the Justice Department said.

After Alton Sterling was shot by police in 2016, his death spawned protests across the nation.

Following the conclusion of the state's two-year investigation into the death of Alton Sterling, Louisiana Attorney General, Jeff Landry announced that both Blane Salamoni and Howard Lake would not receive any criminal charges for shooting Alton Sterling. According to a police dispatch, officers were told a man outside the store was threatening another man with a gun. It also claims poor training and inadequate police procedures led to Sterling's death. The officers were responding to a report that Sterling was selling CDs and that he allegedly threatened a man with a gun.

The 26-page lawsuit alleges that Salamoni and Lake breached protocol, used excessive force and violated Sterling's constitutional guarantees against unreasonable searches and seizures and of due process. Sterling was black and both officers are white.

Giants 'Listening To Trade Calls' For Odell Beckham Jr
But one thing seems certain: a late first-round pick isn't going to be enough for the Giants to trade their best offensive weapon. During his first three seasons in the league, Beckham was one of the more productive young wideouts in NFL history.

L. Chris Stewart, an Atlanta-based lawyer representing Sterlings' relatives, said the family was disappointed by the decision.

State investigators received the case in May 2017 after the U.S. Department of Justice announced it would not be pursuing civil rights charges against the officers, reports CBS affiliate WAFB.

Sterling was fatally shot outside of the Triple S Food Mart during a struggle with the officers, which touched off weeks of unrest in the city and clashes between protesters and police.

Veda Washington-Abusaleh, Sterling's aunt, was in tears after meeting with Landry.

During a news conference Tuesday, Quinyetta McMillon said the way the officers killed Alton Sterling was "in cold blood".

The Attorney General released a report on the full investigation into Alton Sterling's death.

Attorney General Jeff Landry's spokeswoman declined comment. Landry said they attempted to make a "lawful arrest", but the 37-year-old resisted and a "struggle" ensued on the ground. According to the attorney general's report, Sterling refused orders to put his hands on the hood of a vehicle, and officers wrestled him to the ground. In a summary of its findings, the Justice Department said Salamoni pointed his gun at Sterling's head but didn't mention any verbal threats by the officer.

Sterling's death in Baton Rouge was one of a number of killings of black men by white officers that helped fuel the Black Lives Matter movement and raised questions about racial bias in USA policing. The next day Philando Castile was shot and killed in Minnesota by police officer and the aftermath was streamed on Facebook by his girlfriend.
