Michigan State official who oversaw Larry Nassar faces charges

Police in Michigan arrested William Strampel, a former dean at Michigan State University who was Larry Nassar's boss, on Monday evening. "Does the dean of the medical school have a duty to check every single employee to see if they're complying with his directives?"
The reviews include surveys in which respondents paint a picture of Strampel as a capable fundraiser and decisive administrator, but someone who "rules with fear" and regularly interjected sexual innuendo and comments about the appearance of women into conversations with students and co-workers.
Two of the charges relate to his supervision of Nassar, the gymnastics doctor accused of molesting more than 200 patients under the guise of medical treatment.
Strampel was Nassar's boss at MSU from 2002 until Nassar was sacked in 2016. Because Strampel did not follow up to make sure Nassar was abiding by the restrictions, he was able to commit a host of additional sexual assaults until he was sacked two years later, prosecutors said.
In recent months, MSU interim president John Engler has been working to fire Strampel and revoke his tenure.
Suspicious packages sent to 4 military installations
The FBI continues to advise the public to remain vigilant and not touch, move or handle any suspicious or unknown packages. It's not known whether any of the packages contained functional explosive devices. "No injuries are reported ".
He is also accused of grabbing students' buttocks on the dance floor at the college's annual ball and at a scholarship dinner. For almost a year, Michigan State trustees declined to request any kind of independent inquiry, and publicly maintained university officials, including Strampel, didn't deserve blame for Nassar's crimes.
In addition to the photos, investigators also found videos on Strampel's computer, including one of Nassar "performing "treatment" on a young female patient". His computer contained about 50 photos of female genitalia, nude and semi-nude women, sex toys and pornography, prosecutors said.
William Strampel, the former dean of Michigan State's College of Osteopathic Medicine, was booked in the Ingham County Jail, according to police records.
A third medical student told investigators that "Strampel agreed to what he called a "favor" and let her take [an] exam a third time".
If convicted, he faces five years and a possible fine of $10,000 for a misconduct in office charge, two years and a possible fine of $500 for the fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge and one year and a possible fine of $1,000 for each of the two willful neglect of duty charges, according to court documents.
The staff member told police Strampel told her in 2006 that "it was good when women were drunk because then it was easy to have sex with them".
Those are some of the other allegations by the prosecutor that led to the felony charge of Misconduct of a Public Official. Strampel is accused of letting Nassar continue to treat patients unchecked by protocols that were supposedly put in place - thus allowing Nassar to "commit a host of sexual assaults against new victims until, following news reports of additional allegations against Nassar, MSU finally terminated his employment over two years later", the complaint says. Strampel served as dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2002 until December, when he stepped down for medical reasons.
The university was in the process of firing Strampel for failing to monitor and enforce restrictions on Nassar following a 2014 sexual harassment investigation.
The Michigan Attorney General's Office is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon, at which special prosecutor William Forsyth will provide an update on his investigation into how Nassar could have sexually abused girls and young women for almost 20 years without the school intervening.
