"Our product and technology strategy is dedicated to positioning Nissan to lead the automotive, technology and business evolution", said Philippe Klein, Nissan's chief planning officer. The company is also targeting an 8% core operating profit margin and cumulative free cash flow of 2.5 trillion yen. "Our efforts are focused on delivering Nissan Intelligent Mobility, encompassing the three core elements of electrification, autonomous drive, connectivity and new mobility services". Part of the company's M.O.V.E.to 2022 midterm plan, the initiative also calls for the ramp up of autonomous and connected vehicles. The project utilizes the growing number of used electric-car batteries that will become available as electric vehicles increase in popularity around the world.

Infiniti will accelerate the electrification trend, with new models being either pure electric vehicles or utilising e-Power technology from the fiscal year 2021.

Its Japanese rival, Toyota, had announced at the end of 2017 its intention to achieve, by 2030, at least 50% of its global sales with electric and hybrid vehicles (fuel/electric), against the 15%, at the moment.

Together with French partner Renault and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan forms part of the world's biggest automaking alliance by sales. This new affordable EV will be jointly developed by the Alliance and Dongfeng on an A-segment SUV platform. Nissan has said that it plans to put fully-autonomous cars into production sometime in the next few years.

Through 2022, vehicles powered by its "e-power" gasoline-hybrid technology would likely comprise the majority of Nissan's electric line-up through 2022, it said. The plan also talks about company's plans on driving systems, vehicle connectivity and autonomous driving technology.

Nissan's electric push will also include the expansion of its e-POWER technology. In fiscal year 2016, the company sold 5.63 million vehicles globally, generating revenues of 11.72 trillion yen.
