Politico reports White House officials told Bryant this week there was concern regarding Hyde-Smith's history as a Democrat (she switched parties in 2010) and whether that would hurt her chances in the special election against state Sen.

Bryant's decision was not a surprise, and Hyde-Smith will run in November to fill out the rest of Cochran's Senate term, which is up in 2020.

She is keen to work closely with Mississippi's other Republican senator, Roger Wicker, she said, and to promote the president's agenda.

I pledge to serve all of our citizens with honor and respect.

Bryant plans an announcement Wednesday in Brookhaven.

McDaniel supporters rallied at the MS state capitol last week to urge Gov. Bryant to appoint him to serve as the interim US senator.

She emphasized her commitment to upholding conservative politics, stating, "I am for repealing Obamacare".

McDaniel warned Breitbart News Sunday radio listeners and the governor just days ago that if the governor made an appointment, it could cause an unnecessary Republican bloodbath leading up to the November special election.

She will face at least two challengers in Republican state Senator Chris McDaniel, who challenged Cochran in 2014, and Democrat Mike Espy, a former congressman who served as agriculture secretary in the Clinton administration.

And Mr. McDaniel, who has a history of making incendiary comments, would be more at risk of losing than a less-controversial Republican.

She spent 12 years as a state senator representing District 39, where she served eight years as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee. On the heels of elections across the country where previous Republican strong-holds have flipped in favor of the Democrat in the race, The GOP has to be more concerned with the increase in voters turning out for Democratic candidates in mid-term and special elections.

The Republican governor of MS intends to appoint a former Democrat to fill the seat Senator Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is vacating next month. "She is a very well-qualified person whose experiences and excellent character will benefit our state in Washington", he said. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., announced he will resign effective April 1 because of health issues. Cochran, anticipating McDaniel would make a bid for his seat if he were to resign, held the announcement that he meant to retire before the end of his term until McDaniel was forced to announce his bid for Wicker's seat.

Hyde-Smith, a Republican who is now the state's agriculture and commerce commissioner, will replace longtime GOP Sen.

In 2011, she won a three-way GOP primary for agriculture commissioner without a runoff.

Hyde-Smith noted her desire to protect second amendment rights, support our troops, repeal Obamacare, protecting rights of the unborn and defend our borders. It and Vermont are the only two US states that never have elected a woman to Congress. The 80-year-old said he would leave April 1.
