  • President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga

He announced fierce resistance to Kenyatta's rule that culminated in his mock swearing in as the "people's president" on January 30 at a public park in Nairobi.

"We have agreed to meet as NASA on Monday and know what exactly happened yesterday, but my heart is at peace, I feel vindicated; what I have been preaching will happen", said Musyoka in a statement Saturday.

Kenyatta expressed optimism that with direct flights between Kenya and the US starting this October, there will be an "exponential increase" in the number of American tourists, business people and students, taking advantage of world-renowned tourism products and growing trade and investment opportunities in Kenya.

Tillerson is expected to hold several meetings in the country, including meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta on topics such as trade, global terrorism and emerging issues after the 2017 general elections. "That starting today, we will begin a process of bringing our people together".

Mr Odinga has said Kenya has never dealt with the challenges "that our diversity (different tribes) was always going to pose to our efforts to create a prosperous and united nation ..."

While political violence did not come close to that which followed the 2007 vote - when over 1,100 lives were lost - the disputed elections led to the deaths of over 100 people, a lot of them shot by police.

The leaders welcomed Mr Kenyatta and Mr Odinga's resolve to work together, saying they should implement and achieve the Jubilee administration's four plan agenda.

"The US is glad to see Kenya building investor confidence because that will help in the growth of the economy", the US Secretary of State said.

He also told the Kenyan government that it should not threaten the courts. He said he was due back in the country on March 26, 2018 "so as to continue the struggle for electoral justice and the culture of impunity that both Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta now represent".

"We really want to give them the credit. And we look forward to the support of every single leader". The Supreme Court earlier nullified an August presidential poll and ordered the October re-run.

A joint statement signed by Kenyatta and Odinga identified key areas that will be at the center stage of their new mission to promote national healing.

He said the security situation is still dependent on AMISOM and Somalia partners, and that the planned UN/AU withdrawal of AMISOM by 2020 needs to be carefully reviewed.
