  • Cabinet unanimously approves eighth amendment referendum bill

Ireland will get a glimpse today of what the legal landscape, post-repeal of the eighth amendment, might look like, following the publication of a government policy paper on abortion legislation.

It will also propose that medical practitioners who are opposed to abortion should be allowed to cite a conscientious objection as provided for in existing legislation.

The bill to hold a referendum on the Eighth Amendment, which provides for the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn, will be introduced in the Dáil today.

Voters will be asked whether they approve of the statement: "Provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancies".

Trump will get his military parade - without the tanks
As planning continues, the memo gave no more details on the type of weaponry to be featured in the parade. The parade Trump was referring to is the Bastille Day parade he attended a year ago in Paris.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the referendum, which campaigners on both sides have long awaited, is about allowing women to make major decisions for themselves.

Mr Harris said he was looking into introducing a system of free contraception in an effort to reduce pregnancies.

The initial judgment related to an immigration case in which a Nigerian man sought to revoke a 2008 deportation order in proceedings initiated eight years later on the basis that his Irish partner was at that time pregnant with their child.

"But I accept they represent a quantum leap from our position on the spectrum today where we have one of the most restrictive regimes in relation to termination and I think are pegged somewhere in and around where Saudi Arabia is on the issue".

Fianna Fail TD Billy Kelleher - a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Abortion said Irish women have been failed by the Eighth Amendment.

Explaining the ruling, barrister Paul Anthony McDermott told RTÉ's Morning Ireland: "What the Supreme Court has said in a nutshell is that other than the right to life, all your constitutional rights start at birth".

"It's about trusting women to decide, in the early weeks of their pregnancy, what's right for them and their families", Varadkar said.

He added: "The first thing we have to do, if we are to bring about change, is to repeal Article 40.3.3".

"This is a historic and momentous day for Ireland, and for the women of Ireland, in particular", said Ailbhe Smyth, convenor of the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.
