Opioid overdoses spiked 30% between July 2016 and September 2017, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The researchers also analyzed 45 million emergency department visits that occurred in 16 states during the same period, which included 119,198 suspected opioid overdoses.

The CDC study looked at emergency room data for opioid overdoses, for the period between July 2016 and September 2017; with the CDC citing that information gathered from records of emergency room visits offered a more in-depth analysis than comparisons of opioid-related death rates. Substantial increases in overdose rates cut across all categories, including men (30 percent) and women (24 percent), and people aged 25 to 34 (31 percent), 35 to 54 (36 percent), and 55 or older (32 percent). But Delaware, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin all saw increases of 50 percent or more in opioid overdose emergency visits.

New data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests drug overdose deaths declined in some states - but not in Oklahoma.

"I often don't know if it's heroin, methadone or fentanyl they've overdosed on".

CDC Head on Opioid Report: 'This Is a Wake-Up Call'
States that saw a slight decrease in opioid overdoses included Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. Emergency department visits jumped 35 percent for the 16 states where overdose visits were tracked by CDC researchers.

Schuchat called the report "very, very concerning" and said it served as a "wake-up call about the need to improve what happens when a patient leaves the emergency department".

Increases in other states across the nation are even more alarming - Wisconsin up 108 percent, Pennsylvania 80 percent, DE nearly 105 percent in suspected overdoses.

Significant increases occurred in Wisconsin (108.6 percent) DE (105 percent), Pennsylvania (80.6 percent), IL (65.5 percent), in (35.1 percent), ME (34 percent), North Carolina (31.1 percent), OH (27.7 percent), Missouri (21.4 percent) and Nevada (17.9 percent).

There's more bad news about the country's staggering opioid epidemic.

"Yep", he said. "We see a little of everything".

Another Winter Storm Days After Powerful Nor'easter
A quick changeover from mixed precipitation to snow is expected Monday afternoon as temperatures fall to near the freezing mark. A few downed trees and isolated power outages are not ruled out. "Then it keeps snowing until Tuesday morning", he said.

"This fast-moving epidemic affects both men and women, and people of every age".

The reported overdoes were not all fatal, and health officials say the ED data can act as an "early warning system for health departments to identify increases in opioid overdoses more quickly and coordinate response efforts".

However, neither Congress nor the White House has appropriated new funding to treat people affected by the opioid crisis, despite pleas from public health officials, some of whom have put a starting price tag at $6bn.

ROB STEIN, BYLINE: Americans have been struggling with the opioid epidemic for years now, so you'd think things might be finally starting to get better. And just last week, he held a high-profile summit on the epidemic at the White House.
