Attorney General Jeff Sessions has railed against

The suit, which also named Brown and Attorney General Xavier Becerra as defendants (but misspelled Brown's name), takes aim at California's "sanctuary state" law as well as two other state laws aimed at shielding undocumented immigrants.

The nation's top cop will speak about "sanctuary jurisdiction" issues at an annual conference organized by California Peace Officers' Association, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The centerpiece of California's resistance to President Donald Trump's promised immigration crackdown, the law limits who state and local law enforcement agencies can hold, question and transfer at the request of federal immigration officials, and it bars officers from inquiring about a person's immigration status.

Sessions particularly called out Oakland's mayor, Libby Schaaf, after she tipped off an immigrant community to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid, as an example of what he sees as California's lawlessness.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the state of California on Tuesday, claiming that the state has violated the Constitution by enacting "sanctuary" laws that protect and give aid to undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

Washington is the first state to pass its own net neutrality laws
Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in another attempt to block the repeal of the federal net neutrality rules . But: As the Verge notes the FCC actually made a decision to prohibit states from introducing their own laws like this.

Ironically, the Obama administration, through Attorney General Eric Holder, challenged an Arizona immigration law on similar grounds to those that Sessions is using to confront California - and prevailed at the Supreme Court.

Late Tuesday the Justice Department sued to overturn three California statutes that render it more hard for officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to obtain the cooperation of local officials and private employers to make arrests.

He told officers at the meeting, "California is using every power it has, and some it doesn't, to frustrate federal law enforcement".

Sessions called the California laws "irrational, unfair and unconstitutional".

The fate of immigration policy in California is increasingly in the hands of federal judges. Another stops local governments from contracting with for-profit companies and ICE to hold immigrants. This administration believe in States' rights when it is convenient for their cause.

"Immigration law is the province of the federal government", Sessions said.

But Sessions said it is more than one mayor.

Sessions cited acting ICE Director Homan, who last week said in a statement that 864 illegal immigrants remained at large in the community because of Schaaf's warning. Brown says the actions are about dividing America.

In a statement a year ago the association's president, Gardena Police Chief Ed Madrano, said the compromise "addresses the significant public safety concerns we raised during this debate, and it reaffirms what we have held since the beginning, which is that California law enforcement should not be used to assist in mass deportations". He said the mayor's alert allowed 800 "criminals" to escape ICE agents during a statewide sweep that netted 232 people. In his address, Sessions compared California's resistance to federal immigration law to the efforts of the Old South and the Confederacy to resist the Union.
