USA space technology company SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket in the wee hours of Tuesday morning local time, carrying a telecommunication satellite to the geostationary transfer orbit. The two-hour launch window is set to begin at 12:33 AM EST (9:33 PM PST) so it's a late one, but if you're a fan of watching SpaceX make history, this is one to watch.

"Successful deployment of Hispasat 30W-6 to a geostationary transfer orbit confirmed", Space X said in a Twitter message.

The last launch saw the Falcon Heavy rocket put Elon Musk's own Tesla Roadster into space. The total cost of a Falcon 9 launch is predicted to reach £44 million ($61m).

The Madrid-based company Hispasat will use the newly launched satellite for a variety of purposes. The Falcon 9 has evolved considerably since its first test flights to become the only fully reusable launch platform in the world.

SpaceX has already had a very busy year.

The weather is 90 percent favorable for launch, according to the Air Force forecast. If everything goes according to plan, it will be the 50th time the company's Falcon 9 rocket successfully heads into the stratosphere since its inaugural flight in June 2010.

Rough seas prevented SpaceX from attempting to land the Falcon 9's first-stage booster, which was expected to be destroyed when it splashed down in 26-foot waves.
