Pakistan Supreme Court Rules Ousted Leader Nawaz Sharif Cannot Lead His Party

Earlier today, Supreme Court ruled that a disqualified politician can not lead a political party, paving the way for the removal of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from chairing his party, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz. It citied articles 62 and 63 of the Pakistani Constitution, which state that a disqualified individual can not lead a party, Pakistan Today reported.

Pakistan's top court has ruled that a person disqualified for public office can not serve as head of a political party, paving the way for the removal of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from chairing the country's ruling party.

In the verdict read out by the chief justice, it was also stated that a party's presidency is directly related to the parliament.

It said that all decisions taken by Sharif in his capacity as party chief stand null and void.

The order comes six months after the Supreme Court disqualified him as prime minister of Pakistan after corruption charges surfaced against him and his family in the Panama Papers case.

"Nawaz Sharif is and will remain PML-N chief", PML-N MPA Hina Butt tweeted minutes after the verdict was announced.

Confusion prevails about the Senate candidate nominated by Sharif as the PML-N president for the March 3 election.

The apex court began hearing the case in January 2018.

The decision will likely force Sharif to step down as president of Pakistan's ruling Muslim League-N party and possibly end his career in politics.

Chief Justice Nisar also observed that there is no reason for the apex court to use words like thief, adding that the fallout of the issue is unacceptable.

The Islamabad-based Accountability Court launched trials against Sharif and his children - Maryam, Hussain and Hassan - in September. The judges are also considering whether the person, who is ridiculing the judiciary, can work as party head.
