Southwest flight leaving BWI slides off runway

It is understood there were 149 passengers on board but so far no report of any injuries have emerged.

A Southwest Airlines plane almost went off the runway Wednesday morning just before it was set to depart from BWI Airport.

The plane slid as it was on the taxiway getting ready to take off.

"The 143 passengers and six crewmembers safely deplaned via airstairs and were bussed to the airport terminal", a statement from Southwest Airlines issued to International Business Times read.

The aircraft remained on the pavement, according to officials with the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration. It appeared to be at around a 45-degree angle from the taxiway path. BWI officials say that as the aircraft was taxiing out, it turned and stopped near the taxiway pavement edge, where it remains.

It is unclear whether this incident will affect other scheduled outbound flights from BWI.

The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport reported by means of Twitter that Southwest Airlines flights "keep on operating".

Hours before the incident, the FAA had warned that winter weather could delay flights in Baltimore as well as Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia airports in addition to those in the NY and Washington areas.
