Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has reported its most profitable quarter since 2009, largely thanks to the success of its 10-month-old Switch console.

In terms of pure facts and figures, Nintendo has sold 14.86 million Switch consoles over its ten-month lifespan, 7.23 million of which came in the last three months of 2017.

On the software side, Nintendo says Super Mario Odyssey is the top-selling title with 9.07 million units. Naturally, this news is continuing the upward trend for NTDOY stock, which has been on a tear since the Nintendo Switch was released last March. This has surpassed the Wii U's 13.56 million units sold, accumulated throughout its 4-year shelf life before discontinuation. By hitting back - and capturing the public's imagination - with the Switch, the company has proved them wrong.

Download sales for Nintendo Switch helped push total download sales up to 43.1 billion yen (87% increase on a year-on-year basis).

Compared to past year, that's a 177% gain in revenue and a whopping 261% improvement in profit. Switch is expected to comfortably exceed 15 million sales by March 2018, up from the previous estimate of 14 million.

Nintendo released its fiscal Q3 earnings yesterday and blew past analyst expectations on both revenue and profit.

Natural disaster strikes Afghanistan; tremors felt in Delhi
Quake of magnitude 6 .1 on Richter scale struck Hindu Kush mountains in northern Afghanistan on Wednesday. Shocks have also been felt in Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi triggering fear among the citizens.

This year is already set to be another big one for Nintendo. Considering that as the install base continues to grow every month the rate at which new games are purchased should also quicken, it may happen even sooner than that. The company attributes its holiday season success to popular Mario games that were released.

Looking ahead to the fiscal year starting April 1, Kimishima said he hoped annual Switch sales could top 20 million units.

Since the launch of Nintendo's Switch, the company's market value has steadily risen.
