BBC fails to convince female staff with pay review

  • The BBC's China editor Carrie Gracie quit this month to protest what she called a failure to address the pay gap

Factors cited by management such as audience recognition could not justify differences in pay, a report by a group representing women at the BBC said.

The BBC has already acknowledged and published its gender pay gap of 9.3 per cent, which is better than the national average, and pledged to promote more women to senior roles.

Lord Hall told Newman: "I don't believe there has been illegality in the BBC to the point where someone said you're a woman therefore you're going to be paid less".

The Guardian leads on the report into on-air pay at the BBC, saying claims there was "no evidence" of gender bias in pay decisions sparked an "angry backlash" from women at the corporation.

The BBC's wage bill will rise this year, the director-general has suggested, after a report into on-air salaries found almost 200 household names have been underpaid.

It says 98 male presenters and 90 female presenters are entitled to a rise because their salaries are below the new pay ranges for their roles.

MA gaming panel to meet Wednesday on Wynn allegations
UBS lowered its rating for Wynn Resorts to neutral from buy on Monday, citing the rising scrutiny from regulatory bodies. Wynn, who has denied the allegations, resigned Saturday as finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The BBC Women lobby group has steadfastly fought attempts by the Corporation to pour oil on the troubled waters of the issue, which exploded into view last summer when the BBC was obliged to reveal the salaries of all presenting talent paid over £150,000.

The BBC said the review, which covers correspondents, presenters and on-air editors in news and news-related areas "found no evidence of gender bias in pay decision-making, but identified a number of issues in relation to pay which have resulted in anomalies that need addressing".

The BBC said in a statement that the public service broadcaster was "very grateful" to Huw Edwards, Nicky Campbell, John Humphrys, Jon Sopel, Nick Robinson, and Jeremy Vine for agreeing to reduce their salaries.

It previously wrote to the BBC over its former China editor Carrie Gracie and said it had now received a response from the broadcaster.

Tony Hall, director-general of the BBC, said: "The BBC believes in equality".

You don't bring rights down in order to achieve equality, you bring people up", she said, "In Canada, the law is: if there's discrimination, you bring the women's pay up.

Lawyers: Trump Shouldn't Be Required to Meet With Mueller
Graham said the memo's review instead should be done by impartial third parties "outside of the Republican-led Congress". In an interview on ABC's "This Week", Graham said Mueller is "the flawless guy" to get to the bottom of what happened.

"The plans we're setting out today go further and are more important steps in modernising the BBC and making it fairer", he said.

A "backlash" over the BBC's pay review, a "dramatic" warning over a crackdown on speeding and a plea over social care funding top the news agenda on Wednesday.

An independent audit into equal pay at the BBC will be published next week.

Radio 2's Chris Evans topped the list on more than £2 million, while the highest paid woman was Claudia Winkleman on between £450,000 and £499,999.

"It is clear that the BBC still has a big problem in terms of gender pay", Collins said.

Equality can not be dependent on somebody else 'doing the right thing.' Women are either entitled to equal pay, equal rights, and equal treatment or else we remain dependent members of society.
