President Rodrigo Duterte said he told Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to ignore human rights activists, describing them as a "noisy bunch".

Frustration over Myanmar's handling of the Rohingya crisis has boiled over into an argument between Aung San Suu Kyi and her former friend, now critic, Bill Richardson.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said he advised Nobel Peace Prize victor, Aung San Suu Kyi, to ignore criticisms from human rights organizations as he continued to lambast critics of his drug war.

Until this week, Richardson was on a board tasked with implementing the recommendations of a commission helmed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Richardson went on to say that he was "taken aback by the vigor with which the media, the United Nations, human rights groups and in general the global community were disparaged", as the panel held meetings with Myanmar officials during the past three days.

"The Rohingya repatriation plan offered by the Burmese terrorist government is not anywhere near to the solution but it creates more annihilation to the Rohingyas".

And in his resignation letter, Richardson accused members of being a "cheerleading squad" for the government.

The former United States ambassador to the United Nations resigned from an advisory panel set-up by the government after accusing members of trying to "whitewash" the crisis.

Almost 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar's Rakhine State to Bangladesh since the beginning of August, after Myanmar security forces began "clearance operations" in the wake of attacks by Rohingya insurgents on police posts.

Suu Kyi, known as a democracy and human rights icon, has disappointed many for her silence over the persecution of Rohingyas in her country.

On January 16, Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a document on "Physical Arrangement" which will facilitate the return of Rohingyas to their homeland following a deal between the two countries in November previous year regarding the repatriation. Inside Myanmar the Rohingya are widely regarded as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh even though many have lived there for generations.

"And she exploded", he said on Friday.

The Myanmar government has pledged to rebuild Rohingya villages, and is urging them to return. "I just felt that my advice and counsel would not be heeded".
