He expressed his affection for the American president in response to the USA ambassador's reported apology for Trump's recent reference to African nations as "shithole countries". However, Sen. Richard J. Durbin (Ill.), the lone Democrat present in the Oval Office at the time, said Trump's denial was false.

Mr Museveni's comments are in opposition to the reaction of many leaders who have condemned Mr Trump's language.

On Monday, people in Haiti, another country that Mr Trump disparaged, protested against the United States president's remarks.

Earlier in the day, the United States ambassador to Uganda, Deborah Malac, in a one-on-one with the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, said Mr Trump's comment about the continent was insensitive.

President Donald Trump sparked a firestorm of criticism after he allegedly disparaged Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations by calling them "s**thole countries".

Speaking on Tuesday, however, Museveni suggested he felt differently about the comments.

"I don't know whether he was misquoted or whatever".

Uganda's representative to the East African Legislative Assembly, Susan Nakawuki, agreed with Museveni's comments, but says the challenge with Africa is that it does not have opportunities such as Western countries.

To critics of Museveni, the kinship is not so surprising. "Mr. Trump. I love Trump", he said.
