Former Oregon coach Mark Helfrich lands job in NFL

Helfrich went 37-16 over four seasons, leading OR to the first College Football Playoff championship game after the 2014 season.

On Thursday, it was announced that the former Ducks leading man has been hired by the Chicago Bears, where he will serve as the team's offensive coordinator under new head coach Matt Nagy.

Helfrich is Nagy's fourth reported coaching hire and the first without ties to Lovie Smith's Bears staff.

In his final season, OR went 4-8, and every week there was speculation about his future in Eugene, generating bad feelings among fans. He has 20 years of experience at the college level but will coach in the National Football League for the first time.

It looks like he's found his new offensive coordinator, too. Helfrich was out of coaching a year ago, but spent 2009 to 2016 with the Oregon Ducks as their offensive coordinator and also as their head coach.

Nagy confirmed on Monday that he will be calling his own plays.

The Browns also snapped up at least one Special Teams Player of the Week award in the AFC every season from 2011 through 2016. His speciality has been working with quarterbacks during his career, having coached the position at Boise State, Arizona State (under current Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter), Colorado and Oregon.
